Mendelssohn Festival
The Mendelssohn Festival was launched in 1997; initiated by Kurt Masur, it grew out of the successful Gewandhaus Festival, which was held in autumn. At first, the Mendelssohn Festival centred around the anniversary of the composer's death on 4 November. Since 2006, however, friends of Felix Mendelssohn's music have gathered in Leipzig for approximately 14 days at the end of August/ beginning of September to pay tribute to the composer and his music and to examine particular aspects of his life and work more closely. Orchestral concerts, choral works, chamber music, scholarly symposia and guided tours on specific topics are presented.
Information on the Festival is available on the Gewandhaus and Mendelssohn House web sites.
